Birmingham City University is the nation's most ‘in demand‘ university according to a table of top performers published in influential sector magazine, Times Higher Education (THE).

Birmingham City University has seen the biggest increase in students applying for places this September compared to any other UK university, an increase of 35.6% compared to a national average of 8%.

These impressive figures - officially compiled by the Universities and Colleges Admission Service (UCAS) - place Birmingham City University as leader in a top ten of ‘in demand' universities compiled by THE.

In total 18,792 people have applied for degrees and other courses at Birmingham City University for the academic year 2009/2010.
Professor David Tidmarsh, Vice-Chancellor at Birmingham City University, said: "To be the most ‘in demand university' in the country is an excellent achievement - one we can all be proud of.

"This success proves that the University is fast becoming a first choice for students.

"The swell in applications is down to our portfolio of excellent courses, the investment we have made in facilities for teaching and learning - but above all our first-rate staff.

"As a result the University has become more attractive to a broad range of students. I'm sure that one of the most alluring areas for any potential student is our success rate in turning graduates into people who have the knowledge and skills to enter the world of work.

"For some time now, the University has worked in consultation with employers to help our graduates apply their skills and knowledge in the workplace - helping to make our students future-proof."

The latest UCAS figures refer to the all-important January 15th deadline. In the UK 464,167 people applied for a full-time undergraduate course at universities and colleges, a rise of 33,678 or 7.8%
